daily fitbattle #1033 (music is your friend)


I’ve been in battle for 1033 days. (Yes, I realize I missed posting my blog last night. I had a friend in need so the blog had to be put on the back burner for one night.) Here are my daily stats:

  • morning naked weight: only one more day till the weigh in
  • workout: WEDNESDAY…Morning: quick stretch and 45 minutes on the stairmaster. Evening: stretching and lower body (legs) with Chris. THURSDAY…Morning: stretching, treadmill for 40 minutes. 20 minutes of 1 min intervals at 4.0 and 6.0 and 15 minutes at an incline including 5 minutes at 15% incline at 3.0 mph, 5 minutes at 10% incline at 3.3 mph, and 5 minutes at 5% at 3.7 mph. Then 5 min cooling down. Evening: I’m planning on going to spin class tonight.
  • food consumption (yesterday): TUESDAY…5 meals consisting of calories = 1506, protein = 141, carbs = 195, fat = 27. WEDNESDAY…5 meals consisting of calories = 1650, protein = 149, carbs = 155, fat = 45
  • successes: both Wednesday and Thursday mornings I had a bunch of justifications running through my mind of why it would be okay to skip my morning workout including way too little sleep last night but I man’d up and got to the gym both mornings.
  • opportunities: getting back into the groove with nutrition is harder than you’d think…Tuesday way too many carbs. Wednesday carbs were better but calories and fat were high.

Music is your friend at the gym…if I forget my iPod shuffle on a visit to the gym I’m crushed and I actually get a little anxious. I end up surviving the trip to the gym without it. Sometimes I’ll use my iPhone if I have spare headphones with me, but that’s not usually the case.

Why music…well even when I’m doing cardio I need to get into a zone which requires elimination of all distractions and believe me, if you do not frequent the gym, there are many distractions.

Distractions…let me go on a little tangent. Please indulge me here. First and foremost the gym is one of the best people watching places you can find. It’s got it all. The way people dress, act, workout and not workout, talk, the guys checking out girls discretely and not discretely (okay girls do it too, but usually discretely), the girls that are obviously at the gym for attention…you know skimpy bra top sporting a belly button ring and rhinestones on the behind of their sweats, the groups of people who are just socializing, some of the ridiculous things people do in the name of exercise…need I go on?

To make sure I actually get a good workout in it’s essential I block out any and all distractions and one weapon for doing so is music. Another trick, and I’ve done this many times, is close my eyes. Now it’s not always a good idea to close your eyes. For example, I do not recommend closing your eyes when you are on the treadmill. But on the stairmaster or in spin class, not so bad. If closing my eyes will only lead to injury I find something to focus on (not a person), maybe a TV. The trick is to look towards the TV but not really watch TV.

When I’m in the zone I do not really seeing anything although my eyes are wide open (difficult to explain). It’s like those pictures of nothing, just a bunch of colors and when you look at them cross-eyed you see an image. Getting into the zone is not easy…the music helps a lot.

I have two play lists for the gym (“running” and “stairmaster”). I mentioned that I have an iPod shuffle, so I use iTunes. There are a handful of songs that are on both of my play lists but most of the songs are not dupes. The running songs have a beat that I can run too and I would say that most of them match 6.0 mph or higher. The stairmaster songs have a more distinct beat so when I’m feeling weary the beat of the songs keep me going.

I’ve provide a list of the songs on both of my play lists below just in case you want to consider adding some of these songs to your music collection. I am looking forward to the big weigh in tomorrow morning to see how I netted out the last two weeks with the Cancun vacation. I think it will be okay, but we will see. Until tomorrow…Kathi

    • U r right! I figured out that the one song that worked was track 6…Cut Your Losses. I promise to pick a song for my playlist when you give me a new CD. And hey I added you to my blog roll. 😉

  2. Hey KK, Elliott and I like a compilation I think he found from itunes, Serena Williams’ Interval Run. I often just play the music although there is also an option where she uses segments to set up an interval workout with her voice prompts as the title implies. Perhaps a Kathi’s Interval StairMaster mix is in order?,,,
