daily fitbattle #1045 (snacks or no snacks?)

16Mar10

I’ve been in battle for 1045 days. Here are my daily stats:

DAILY STATS DETAILS
Workout MORNING…stretching, elliptical (Cybex Arc, I believe) for 12 minutes, stairmaster for 30 min at level 6, and the treadmill for a 10 min doing 1 min intervals at 4.0 and 6.0. EVENING…plan is stretching, a quick warm up and Push of the Push/Pull Split with Chris
Food
Consumption
MON: 5 meals, calories = 1440, protein = 135, carbs = 155, fat = 31
Successes Back on track with nutrition and I tried a new cardio machine to mix things up today.
Opportunities Slightly low on protein and slightly high in fat.

Snacks or no snacks? Before I started my fitbattle I typically ate 2 meals per day:

  • Coffee for breakfast
  • Lunch (usually)
  • Dinner (something that I could heat up in the microwave)

I didn’t eat an official snack, but I did snack. Snacking (on crap) was inevitable since I skipped breakfast and went 6-8 hours in between lunch and dinner. You know what I’m talking about! The bagels someone brought into the office or even worse…donuts. Candy bars from the vending machine or something out of the kitchen that I could find (I worked in hotels forever so food was always available).

Three significant changes I made when I started this journey were:

  • Eating (really drinking) breakfast every day
  • Eating a snack both in the morning and afternoon
  • Keeping track of everything I eat

I hope I do not need to tell you how important breakfast is. If I do…you’re probably not ready to make a long-term commitment to your fitbattle. Breakfast is easy compared to adding snacks and workouts. Oh man…I really intended to not talk about breakfast and now it’s too late.

To eat is a necessity, but to eat intelligently is an art. ~ La Rochefoucauld

Many of the sources I checked for information on this subject agree that you can lose weight by making changes to your diet, no workouts required. There are too many health benefits from working out. So ask yourself now… are you ready to make a change that might just save your life? Are you ALL IN?

Don’t dig your grave with your own knife and fork. – English Proverb

Okay…back to snacks. Not every source I came across agrees that eating 5 times per day will help you lose weight. But everyone agrees that to lose weight you need to burn more calories than you consume resulting in a calorie deficit.

Here’s why I think snacks rock:

Here’s a few articles I came across that talk about the benefits of incorporating more meals into your day:

Until tomorrow! Kathi
