daily fitbattle #1059 (crap! I have no fitness goals…)


I’ve been in battle for 1059 days. Here are my daily stats:

Workout MORNING…stretching, treadmill for a 21 min doing 2-3 min intervals at 6.0 with 1 min intervals at 4.0, and the trekmill for 27 min on the “high” program at the top of the mountain (max % incline = 25 and speed from 3.0 – 4.0).
EVENING…stretching and Push of the Push/Pull Split with Chris.
MON: 5 meals, calories = 1453, protein = 154, carbs = 139, fat = 30
Successes I had a really great cardio workout this morning! I had my energy back after dealing with this allergy thing for about a week. And great nutrition yesterday.
Opportunities Need to nail down the fat. I’ve not been eating at home with makes keeping the fat down a real challenge.

Crap! I have no fitness goals… To be honest I’ve always had a hard time with this thing called goal setting. I don’t have the greatest memory, but one thing I know…I’ve never really known what I’ve wanted. In some ways I’ve found this to be a strength…let me explain.

Okay, I’ve got to use an example related to career vs. fitness, but I promise I’ll figure out how to circle back around to fitness in a moment. Why do I view this as a strength? Well I’ve known an endless number of people who have spent the better part of their lives not being satisfied. Not satisfied with their title, or pay check, or job in general. (Okay I could probably expand the scope of this example – but I won’t.) I’ve also seen countless people dismiss opportunities all together because it didn’t fit their goals for where they thought they’d be when they thought they’d be there.

I’ve found that I’ve experienced a lot less disappointment by not having nailed down goals of where I want to be and by when. I’ve been much more open to opportunities that have been presented to me. I believe that being too goal oriented can narrow your vision to a point that you risk being blind to the possibilities that a slightly different path may offer you.

What does this have to do with fitness? Hmm…well on Friday my trainer (Chris) asked me what my fitness goals are? I was a bit dumbfounded. Look at all the progress I’ve made in 1000 + days (with NO goals…well except not wanting to gain the pounds back that I lost commuting in Chicago – 3 years ago). I can’t remember the last time someone asked me a question about my goals…any type of goals.

I’ve skated through life – and done well – with pretty much no goals. Don’t get me wrong I have ambition (well I used to anyways), I’ve had a very successful career in hospitality and marketing, I worked my way up the corporate ladder until I nearly achieved complete exhaustion. And all this with no goals – it can be done!

Chris is right…I really need to figure out what my fitness goals are. I suppose the point of tonight’s blog is to out myself. I feel like I’m 16 and being asked what I want to do with my life. Honestly…considering I don’t have job, I’ve got no desire to rush back work (can you blame me?), and I spend my days doing twofers at the gym, regular 2-hour stops at Starbucks to converse with the other unemployed people, and getting projects done around the house that would have never gotten done if I was still working, basically I’m 16 again – crap! Oh…but I LOVE it! I lost myself a long time ago and now I’m found!

What’s my first goal? Set fitness goals (of course) and then I’ll work on what I want to do when I grow up. Yes, as soon as my fitness goals are ready…you’ll be the first to know (well actually the 3rd…me 1st, Chris 2nd, and then the world-wide web).
