daily fitbattle #1103 (is water all that?)


I’ve been in battle for 1103 days. Here are my daily nutrition stats for Wednesday:

Here are my other stats for today:

Workout MORNING…no workout
MID DAY…physical therapy and I actually broke a sweat
EVENING…stretching and lower body (legs) with Chris
Successes Wow a good nutrition day yesterday
Opportunities Skipped the morning workout since I had physical therapy and appointment with my trainer, so I didn’t get my morning cardio in today.

Is water all that?

The funny thing is if anyone were to ask me why they should drink more water or how much is enough I would not have had a solid response. Problem solved…I’m now armed with water facts…so watch out!

Personally I LOVE water!!! I drink water all day. The only other thing I drink besides water is coffee and protein shakes. Oh…wait a minute…I also drink alcohol. I usually only go out one or two nights a week and have a few cocktails. I don’t “drink alone, all by myself” sitting around on my sofa. (Unlike my friend Toby whom I just got off the phone with. He told me he’s chillax’n with a glass of Pinot Grigio at home, yes alone.) I’m a social drinker.

How much water do I drink? Hmm, probably anywhere from 50 – 100 ounces per day. It depends. I take a reusable 24 oz. bottle filled with aqua to the gym and I usually finish it off during my workout. I drink water with each meal and I always put a class of water on my bedside table. It never fails that I’ll wake up at 4am needing to relieve myself and dying of thirst.

Is this much adieu about water on target?

I’m gonna say yes…and if drinking water is not a priority for you…you should consider making it one. Every article that I read on the subject estimates that water accounts for 60-70% of our body weight. I think that’s incredible. I also think that it makes it a no brainer to conclude that our bodies must need water.

Let’s answer the question anyways…why do we need water? Okay, besides the fact that our bodies are primarily made up of water, every function of our bodies requires water. eHow.com stays that failure to replace liquid makes it difficult to breathe and not drinking enough fluids can result in excess body fat, poor muscle tone, and a decreased ability to digest food.

According to the Mayo Clinic some symptoms of mild to moderate dehydration are dry mouth, sleepiness, thirst, muscle weakness, and headache (to name a few). Convinced yet? Man I am…I know some days I don’t get enough water. This research has convinced me! I will be more committed to staying hydrated.

Next obvious question is how much water do we need?

http://www.everystockphoto.com/photo.php?imageId=19709I learned that about 20 % of our daily water requirement comes from food. It’s up to us to make up the difference. Yes coffee, milk, juice count towards our overall water intake, but relying on flavored beverages will result in an increased calorie intake. Consuming too many calories makes it impossible to maintain and/or lose weight.

Most articles also mentioned the 8 x 8 rule…we should drink eight 8 ounce glasses of water a day. One way to accomplish the 8 x 8 goal is to drink a glass of water with each meal and a glass of water in between meals. Add a glass at bed time and a bottle (preferably a “green” reusable bottle) at the gym and voila…8 x 8 is no problem.

I found a “hydration calculator” and after answering a few questions it concluded that I should drink 84.5 ounces of water today. It even gave me the number net my food intake (assuming 20% of my fluids will come from food), adjusting the goal to 67.6 ounces for today. Why today? Well depending on things like temperature and the amount of time spent exercising my water needs will change. One of the reasons I like water is that it helps me curb my hunger…not a bad thing when you are watching what your eat. I also prefer to save my calories for something more substantial than a beverage…like food. Although I have a daily ritual of downing at least one triple-iced-espresso every day…I minimize the calories of my coffee fix by using fat-free milk and splenda. My coffee beverage only ends up costing me 20 calories. I used to drink triple grande non-fat caramel macchiatos which have a whopping 190 calories and 35 grams of carbs – ouch!

The other day I lectured one of my friends on the waste of 300 calories because he ordered a grande soy vanilla latte. I couldn’t help myself…I grabbed the “nutrition by the cup” brochure and showed him how many calories he was consuming in one coffee beverage. 300 calories is equivalent to a meal. I think it’s ridiculous to waste that many calories on a coffee (or any other) beverage regardless of how good it tastes.

Ah…a completed blog and I also managed to get my rant in for the day…nice. I hope this little ditty about water has convinced you to commit to drinking more water every day (assuming that you are not already getting the 8 x 8). I would say try…but trying is just like not doing in my book. Either you are going to commit to drink more water or you aren’t.
